Information Support Team Manager, QUB
Derrick Black is the Information Support Team Manager for the Estates Directorate in Queen’s University Belfast. This directorate is responsible for the maintenance and support of approximately 250 buildings with 21, 000 spaces through the campus. These spaces include simple single offices through to high security, high energy research facilities as well as related teaching and learning facilities.
Derrick’s experiences includes the development of specialist software for the Power Industry including the creation of automated linkages between power plant operation data and FM systems, thereby minimising equipment downtime and maximising profits. The first ever safety document management system was developed locally under Derrick’s control and this work subsequently led to the award of a PhD in Systems engineering.
Graduating in Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and informatics offers a unique perspective on the requirements for the correct implementation of computerised solutions. Derrick is currently undertaking work regarding the mismatch between the requirement for government supported organisations to use the BIM model approach to new builds, and the current inability to derive the proposed benefits of this methodology using the available CAFM solutions.
